Rosemary Arnold thought you may be interested to hear about my great-gt-grandmother, Eliza BROWN, who was the first woman ever to go “aloft” in a hot-air balloon in Australasia. This was because her husband, Charles, was brought out from England in 1857 specifically to fly the very first hot-air balloon (which he’d made himself) and Eliza knew a good deal about the ropes and procedures. She went with him from Richmond over a good part of early Melbourne, and later from The Domain, across Neutral Bay in Sydney in 1859; I have letters and newspaper articles to gives dates and details if needed.

Hadn’t heard that one but that’s very very cool!. I recall being outside one at MOTAT in New Zealand but never got to go through it. I did get through the Sunderland thanks to being there with my father but getting inside a Lancaster is definitely worth paying for :)

Steve,
You conversation with “Bill the Missile Man” was superb. It is an environment with which we have some familiarity, due to movies like WARGAMES, but to actually hear the thoughts of a missile man himself, to capture the feelings and emotions of the age, is priceless. Again, that’s what PCDU is all about… capturing peoples’ stories in their own words.

“Nuke ‘em till they glow” may not be the PC sentiment to which we are all supposed to subscribe, and yet it is a very human, historically correct, and a “take no prisoners” sentiment which was the story of the age.

Thank you for taking the time, making the effort, and spending the Greyhound Bus dollars to bring us this wonderful interview.

Kudos to the Flaps podcast boys… a totally fabulous and entertaining show. Of particular note was the interview they did with the Captain of the BA 777 that had a double engine failure and landed short at Heathrow. (an amazing story, and disturbing in many ways — including how he was treated afterwards). Highly recommended!

It was actually pretty quiet in the cockpit ad far as I was concerned – but then again, I had the helmet on which probably helped.

VERY cool vid, by the way. 30 minute flight edits down to 5 minutes when you take out all the “wahoos!”, “g-grunts” and “foreign language comments”?

I’d be interested to know how noisy it was (engine noise, air noise)… don’t really get a sense of that from the video.

Doesn’t work for me either. I see the player, and get maybe the first half frame of an image, and sometimes the first half second or so of audio, but it doesn’t play (neither the page embedded version or the “play in popup” works for me).
(I’m using Linux/Ubuntu 10.04 OS)

I downloaded the MP4 file, which works fine, so it is just a problem with the inline feeding mechanism, I guess.

After watching the Four Corners story about the QF32 incident on the 28th March 2011, I was very impressed as to see how the FO interacted with the PIC. Gone are the days when FO’s would be intimidated by PIC’s due to seniority. I found it amusing that after touchdown the FO was quizzing the PIC if he was braking and even had a look to ensure he was applying full brakes.

Congratulation fellows.
Fantastic effort putting together the Avalon Quickcast. Sorry I’m late with the praise but I was worn out just listening to you fellows go from interview to interview.
Just too hard to find a favourite. I did find the interview with TVSA Pilot Training interesting as my son has just started a Advance Diploma of Technology (Aviation) at Swinbourne Uni. Sounds like the same VET FeeHELP structure on the CPL part of the course for both the Uni and TVSA.
Again, a superb effort, you all deserve a well earned break, but not too long as I thoroughly enjoy listening to the podcasts.

Vimeo seems to be blocked too! Anything with the words Youtube in it doesn’t work at all, Face Book and I think Twitter are also blocked.
I can watch ABC, Yahoo News, Nine MSN news etc, National Geographic, PBS, Intelligence Squared, The Do Lectures, Real Player, Quick Time videos. Most Pod Casts are okay to listen too. Although I can’t listen to David’s hitch hikers guide!!

Hi Guys,

Once again I commend you on another great episode. My wife and 5 month bub where on QF17 on 15 Nov. I’m glad that the first I heard of it was from my wife upon returning to Sydney. It really brought the whole issue a lot closer to home. Ironically i was listening to this episode on my way back from the airport after I had dropped them off.

I know that the media love to have a real go at Qantas but I’m starting to think that Steve Peruvinas has some real strong (and concerning) points. When we choose QF it’s beacuse of their reliability and safety. I’ve always been a defender of QF and thought that Steve Peruvinas (sorry Steve!) and the media was always simply trying to grab a headline using scare tacticts. However it’s sad to say that I’m begining to think differently. Yes they do have an ageing fleet (especially 744s) but let’s hope, for QFs sake, that they begin to make changes before something realy serious happens.

Having said all this, QF isn’t all bad! From what my wife tells me, without going into too much detail, the service and attention they received was fenomenal (both in SYD and EZE). Everyone was real attentive and helpfull. She also said that the captain walked down the airplane, looking all huffed and sweaty (poor guy mus of been working so hard), stopping at about 10M intervals explaining what had happened.

Let’s hope that QF continues to be the great airline it used to be and not simply become part of the JesStar group!

Nice interviews! Those heavy jet pilots are always worth a yarn. I’m doing aviation at GU in Brisbane and we’ve had a few Qantas pilots out to talk to us and they have all been characters. I’d like to buy that guy a few beers and get him talking!
More seriously, that’s a few serious incidents in recent times for the big Q. Extremely rare, random ones to be sure but the discussion with the LAME was concerning. Qantas and MIM used to have excellent relations between unions and management – it was the Howard/Economic Rationalism era that killed that and it is not good. The simple facts related to apprenticeship starts was illuminating. A happy airline is a safe airline. I decided against looking at Qantas as a future employer as a result of the Dixon era.

Hey, don’t stress mate! It’s a really interesting debate, and life would be boring if everyone had the same views. Having done my CPL & instrument rating in the US, I can’t really comment on the syllabus here – then or now. Through a quirk of finances, I never converted to an Aussie CPL, and probably won’t bother now because I’m quite settled in my current line of work.

Getting my PPL current is a goal I hope to achieve soon though. Basically, I just want to fly again!

My appologies Steve I never meant to imply that you did it because it was easier, and quite frankly I thought of going to the states to do my ratings etc as it was cheaper for flight hours. I actually didn’t make myself clear, I was talking about getting a Commercial licence rather than the PPL. My comment was more driven by the standard of the system in Australia now, compared to when I learnt in the mid 80′s (CPL H, A)
When CASA changed the rules there were a lot of my colleagues disenchanted with the break down in the CPL syllabus. Sure we need PPL pilots, but we also need Professional pilots and I think that the two are very much different in there outcomes.
I could take you up on the offer of a chat, last year we had a Helicopter from Australia working here in Shaoxing right near my University!! Wow!

Hi Alex

I like your observations here, although with respect, I would take issue with a couple of your interpretations.

In my case, the decision to do my training in the US was made for two reasons; first, I was young and the opportunity of an adventure presented itself, and second because the cost of flying training at the time (circa 1990) was decidedly cheaper by comparison to Australia. At no stage did I go there with the thought that it would be easier to achieve my ratings, and I apologise if I’ve ever given that impression to our audience. The point I often try to make in this debate is that the US system is geared to handle the much larger volume of traffic there. That’s not to say their system is perfect, but by comparison to the way things worked here at that time, it was generally more efficient, and yes, easier to use.

Coming back here in 1991 and trying to make sense of the often archaic flight rules & procedures was extremely frustrating. And the culture among many pilots back then was that our system was superior, simply because it was ours. It was inefficient, unnecessarily over regulated, and most importantly, never questioned.

It’s not a matter of “dumbing down” people in order for them to achieve ratings, and frankly, as a holder of a US licence, I find that observation annoying at the very least. It is true that I found some aspects of the US training syllabus different – for example, US pilots are taught to fly circuits differently to Australians, and our pre flight inspection technique is far more thorough. The benefits I feel I gained from training in Australia and the US run in both directions. My ab initio instructors here were thorough and taught me good basic airmanship before I went overseas, and I often recieved praise from US instructors because of this. On the flip side, flying in the type of congested airspace you just can’t find in Australia, gave me invaluable experience.

So I hope this in some way clarifies where I’m coming from. People will always resist change, and I’m sure the system as it stands now can always use improvement. I take your point that some aspects of the old system may have had their place, but it’s my belief that bringing our airspace management to a more common standard with the rest of the world is a good thing – as long as safety is never compromised.

Thanks for continuing to participate in the PCDU community. It’s great to have a bit of debate now & again. I’d love to have a chat to you some time about the aviation scene over there in China. I’m sure it would be fascinating.

Hi Guys,
Just recently on some of the of the Pod casts on aviation that are recorded throughout the World there has seemed to be be a notion of “Dumbing Down” the requirements of airmen (sic) and the maintenance of aircraft. It all seems to brought about by the FAA rules which seem to be “easier” than other countries. My questions are can we afford to always follow the educational system in America? Look at what happened in our schools in Australia. Okay is money the problem? Is the educational standard too high with these “Old Systems”? Steve always talks about how the US was easier for him getting his Pilots licence and cheaper. Australia, as I mentioned in a comment I made (after Dick Smiths interview)had a very good educational system for pilots and as Grant commented to me that Australia has got so expensive to learn to fly etc, but on the downside the educational requirements have slid..? Yes?, but we aren’t any cheaper actually I looked at what is charged for a R22 and they want $495 plus GST AUD per hour for a Robbo!!!
I really think there should be a lot of debate about this “Dumbing Down” of Pilots and the stupidity of the cost of learning to fly and flying to keep current.
I teach English in China and I really try to make sure my students think of me as a Professional teacher and not just a tourist, education is more important to me than saying to someone you give me the cash and you will get the ticket!!
Just some thoughts

Great to hear there’s some inspiration for you in our work. Between this episode and some of the ones with Matt Hall, I’m sure you can find plenty of material about being focused and just making it happen :)

Congrats on getting a job and good luck saving the $$$ for flying. It may seem hard right now but it’s WAY easier to save for flying when you’re young & single. Once the responsibilities start to pile on, there’s always something else that urgently needs that money you’d rather be spending on getting your butt in the air :)

Thanks for your comments. It’ll be interesting to hear your thoughts when we get our next couple of interviews out with Dick :)

You’re right about the expense and much of the “license to print money” that seems to go on (having just paid my Class 2 medical and a new set of AIP, ERSA and charts – ouch!). Airspace safety and the costs of flying are two themes we’re looking to explore in the near future.

As to RedBull – yup – we sure can. Watch this space :)

Hi Ed. Thanks for your very kind comments. We work extremely hard to make things sound as good as we can, and it’s always quite humbling to know that people appreciate it.

As for getting to OSH11, we’ll do our best, but it’s a very long & expensive commute from here, so we’ll have to see how things look next year.

Can you believe I was in the US this time last year and didn’t go to Oshkosh?? What was I thinking?!?

Hi Guys,
I listen to your Pods with interest, I actually teach english in China. I was in GA in australia during the 80′s to mid 90′s.
I can’t believe the way Dick Smith thinks and talks about the “good thing” he did for GA in Australia especially how he justifies it as a Big Brother thing. I trained as CPL (H) (A) and the change that full reporting did was to the detriment of the professional standard. I learnt proper radio procedure, I flew into KS, so many times. By the way we had SAR watch if it was a private flight. DS is not well liked in the industry he dealt that blow to, he sounds as if he is still bitter about it. I met the person, he was arrogrant and rude then, so what else has changed.
I left GA because it became so unprofessional for the CPL pilot, costs went up, we had to pay so much for all our VTCs, Notams,Plates, Maps,landings, any radio call was monitored (the operator recieved a bill),etc etc

What a wonderful podcast. I listened as I plodded around my garden and was enthralled by Deborah’s life story and how she battled against ‘the macho dominated system’. What a waste of her energy that could have been better focused on her flying career. Particularly interesting to me was her change of continent (as I have a dutch mother) and the irony of her son traveling back to Holland, after she had returned to Aus to help him out. Interesting flying experiences are really good for a podcast subject. It helps the listeners understand how challenging it is getting to the pinnacle of ones career in aviation. Her experiences of flying the DC9 and 727 particularly interesting to an aviation enthusiast a little past forty! Fantastic podcast. Well done guys. Deborah Lawrie is the greatest role model for all Australian women. Perseverance and belief in herself.
Debbie is featured in my new book “First Females Above Australia – first 100yrs of Australian women pilot firsts”. It includes 100 short bios and photos, and no historic record has ever been published like this, and my aim is to distribute it to school libraries. I feel this salute to pioneer women pilots is long overdue. I am seeking publishing funds of say $8,000 for a modest 200 page b/w book, colour cover – 1,500 copies. I am Australia’s first woman helicopter pilot (1965). I taught Aviation History at UWS for Bachelor of Aviation degree, a degree that I managed to attain, at age70yrs. I became a uni lecturer just one week after I graduated.Not bad for a 15yr old high school dropout.
Perhaps you may like to interview me on this great book which will be an inspiration to women of all ages. I know Debbie Lawrie and am so proud of her and her wonderful, long-time aviation career. Best regards.

Hey Guys, Thanks for a great episode! I loved listening to Ben … and loved this format too! My vote: Keep it going!
I found it interesting his comments on the delay for the 787. For some reason…up here in Boeing country… we had heard long time ago that the delay was due to inferior parts. Why… that was held top secret. Outsourcing and lack of accountability was the core of that problem. I am sure they’ll work the bugs out before she flies. Hope so! She is going to be a beautiful plane. I’m looking forward to the increased humidity.

I smiled when Ben talked about the cold beer and Mount Ranier… nothing better for marketing.

Tell the Empty Jet Guys best of luck!!! Great idea and I wish them great success!

Just listened to this episode today. Well done for the sheer variety (and quality of your presentations these days. It’s getting so slick down there, you’re be rivaling the Gulf of Mexico and the environmentalists will be after you.)

But geez, if Anthony has so many gripes about flying, he should stay at home. You say he has five more pieces ready to go. Hi guys. Just become a convert to the podcast, it’s great! Especially from an ex-RVAC pilot. Please keep up the good work :)

Just a quick comment on this podcast…I am looking to get back into flying after an absence of around 13 years. I got 64 hours on PA28s and C172s up till 1997, then ran out of cash, halfway through nav training for PPL.

Back around 1997, RAAus (then the AUF) was only just beginning and getting on it’s feet and I, for one, certainly didn’t see it as a viable alternative to GA training.

Now in 2010, I realise that I won’t ever be getting a CPL/ATPL and just want to bum around in the air with the occasional passenger. RAAus seems ideal for this kind of thing.

Thanks Bas for the info on RAAus. It reinforces my decision to go RAAus, knowing that I can go back to GA if I ever want to take up 2 passengers of go NVFR. Can’t wait to scrape some cash together and get back in the air… :)

Interesting concept. Since I have been researching the B-24 for more than 20 years, I did find that David had a couple of the facts on the aircraft a little wrong, but it is an interesting report and it’s always good to hear what veterans have to say about those times. What David couldn’t remember when put on the spot was that there were 19,256 B-24s of all models built. It was nice to hear from Ed Crabtree who was a great help to me when I wrote my first B-24 book back in the late 1990s.

Thanks for the link to Geoff’s podcast. I’ll have to download them and check them out. As to B-O-A-C vs BOAC – wow, I’m starting to wonder what cave I grew up in to have such a different perspective on it? I have memories of people around me saying B-O-A-C when I was growing up, plus I’m sure a documentary record I had on aircraft & airlines from the UK said B-O-A-C (it was pretty old :)

Good point – they were getting into the LCC world when they started working with Impulse, eventually buying them. Buying Impulse let them dabble in LCC & test their ideas somewhat. Once they decided it was “for real” they were able to rebadge and grow.

Wow, you guys do a great job with the shownotes and all those links!

I personally wouldn’t mind full body scans at the airport, I think it’s the ultimate technology to find out what people are carrying around on them and make flying around strangers safer. I don’t think it’s a problem as long as the person looking at the image is in a separate room (pressing a red button if there’s a problem) and can’t look up to compare the naked body image with the real face!

Wow, the R44 crash was just the day before my flight in the R22! They were lucky to put it down where they did, from the photos!!!

The TSA and much of the “security” at airports around the world is “theatre” – it’s all show. None of the current crap we have to go through would have stopped the 9-11 terrorists.

These new “body imager” systems may not be sufficient to spot the funky underwear bomb and certainly won’t detect a dedicated idiot with the bomb materials already inside them.

If the TSA did a serious assessment of past terrorist methods and an impact analysis of potential ways of causing problems, no-one in the USA would be able to rent a truck.

A real “5 Why’s” analysis of the underwear bomber incident would produce some great results. This is where you ask “But Why?” 5 times to determine the root cause of a situation (eg: he was able to trigger the bomb because he got on the plane because they didn’t think to single him out for examination because their system missed the fact that he was travelling without luggage on a ticket paid for with cash etc etc etc)

Too much like real thinking and too likely to raise some very nasty internal issues for most governments. Also doesn’t look as good as knee-jerk reactions that allow politicians to say “Look, we’re doing stuff to protect you, aren’t we great?”

What, me, jaded? Cynical? *sigh* :)

I hear you, Steve! Last year there was an uproar about exactly what you were describing on the USAF Base but here in Sydney. Often the front line of defence at an Australian Defence establishment is an unarmed private security guard wearing a super vest.

Interesting point, and I agree that this country’s obsession with out-sourcing of government functions is crazy at times.
Here’s an odd one in the US though. Last year when I went to the US to stay with my ex-USAF friends, I was checked by the TSA & CBP coming in, and going out, but when we visited an Air Force Base at one point, the guard posts were all manned by private security. Armed to the teeth, mind you, but these posts were previously manned by USAF MPs.
Makes you wonder sometimes…but as Grant pointed out, the TSA is little more than “security theatre”.

Nice episode, guys.

In terms of airport security, should we in fact be going more towards the American model here? Should we replace the private security guards that they use for outwards screening with a dedicated air security/law enforcement organisation?

To use my 09 trip to LAX for instance, why are we going to the lowest common denominator security guard to basically be the first line of defence for the US? Going the other way, they have Customs & AQIS to check us on the way in. So why not on the way out like the US did to me on the way out?

On my way home at LAX, I was checked by the TSA guys at the screening point and then several hours later on the aerobridge by CBP. Doesn’t the CBP trust the TSA? Why not have the TSA and CBP under the same umbrella? Why have two bodies to do the same thing?

And I will work on some promos for you guys when I don’t sound tired!

Mike: I’m all for AirNZ and am the first to say how good they are, but definitely nobody’s perfect. As I said during the show, I’m holding off on my official verdict until I can see the whole range. The articles so far haven’t shown many items yet so I’m holding out hope. Fingers crossed that you’re right and that crappy pink number is an option :)

As to Mexican heat? Where’d it go? Weather down here has been alternating warm & blue skies with fluffy white clouds then huge grey ugly clouds with massive downpours. Come back 35C – 40C, please – I kinda liked it…

Hey, I’m going to defend Air NZ here. I thought we were a step above the regular press (media) being enthusists rather than headline grabbers. Air NZ as far as I can tell have put up options for their staff and what is in demand will be what is produced for them. let’s see what they actually end up with rather than puking at what might be.

Also, how about that Dave Vanderhoof. He’s apparently taking Steve’s lead and getting really schmick with his production techniques and sound affects. Nice to see… er, hear :-)

As usual gents, nice job this week and good to see you back working the pod than slacking about wallowing in the Mexican heat – Yikes!

Grant, it depends on how you get it. The RSS feed is working fine so that means many people can get it ok by itself or in the 5 in 1 feed. It is the iTunes feed that I found was broken (thanks, Mevio!) so I have pulled the iTunes feed down and re-submitted it.

I just had a look at the stats for the episode and it has blown anything I have done by myself lately out of the water!

I think I have now solved that issue at my audio host’s end that I was unaware of until recently. I also have RSS options as well as a 5 in 1 feed that downloads all my shows and that’s how I get my shows.

When customers shop only on price and vendors do not educate them on the many variables involved in setting their prices, you get a race-to-the-bottom situation where competing vendors keep reducing their rates to “win the customer.” To reduce their price, something has to be reduced and that something is typically quality in one of many forms.

In buying flights, quality of in-flight experience is generally reduced to provide the low low fares, leading to the RyanAir environment of “pay for everything, get treated like crap.”

In flight instruction, you wind up with older equipment and instructors getting paid a pittance.

The old rules in business apply:
1) Never get into a competition on price alone
2) Educate the customer on what else is important beyond the price

There’ll always be RyanAir customers, but other airlines can market their higher fares with clever reminders of the sacrifices made to fly with them (poor service, pay n pay n pay, etc). Of course, for this to work, the other airlines need to have better service, fewer charges, etc :)

In flight training, it’s a matter of identifying instructors who are in for the love of training, not just to build hours and then rewarding them accordingly. Naturally the student will pay more per flight hour, but the benefits should far outweigh the pure costs (instructors who understand how to teach, better learning per hour, safer pilots, better equipment with less faults, etc).

The key is to educate the customer on why a simple “cost per hour” comparison is inappropriate in the flight training environment :)

I should have added that RB pay their instructors more than most schools and their admirable commitment to their staff is something that went undiscussed. I used to fly a Pitts (ZZZ) years ago and listening to Joel talk was enough to convince me that I need to get back out there and have a fly! “Pushing buttons” gets boring. Hi guys. Another great show – well done.

I wrote a long post on the needs for flying school owners to take responsibility for building sustainable career paths for instructors but it’s probably an argument best left for another time.

Basically, instructors move into other areas of the industry *not* because it’s a so-called ‘natural progression’… they do so because salary and conditions for instructors are pathetic leaving little choice but to vacate the grass roots of the industry (that requires them the most) for pastures that will pay them as professionals.

Nice work team. It’s great to see PCDU sticking to the subject of Aviation (unlike certain American podcasts that are seemingly transfixed by Social Media) and with lots of topic variety through Air Races, Light Sport a/c, Warbirds, Pilot perspectives and now ATC (have I missed anything?)

Now what’s left? Airlines, International viewpoints, Aircraft Manufacturers? (maybe Randy would like to say a piece – but not Motormouth Leahy please).

As I mentioned during the interview I was an active CPL prior to my ATC career, actually had I not gotten this job I’d have been doing my Navajo endorsement and been flying IFR charter in one. So this isn’t my back-up career, simply an alternate one. Benefits of sitting on this side of the radar is that I don’t have to worry about schedules or staying in hotels at night. However I still have to worry about getting everyone where they want to go safely! Of course should I ever wish to leave ATC I could always go back to flying.

Steve always works wonders on the edits. Every episode he manages to make us sound professional, coherent and knowledgeable – it’s amazing :)

Maybe one day we’ll release a raw, unedited “unplugged” version but it won’t be any time soon. We need at least a few more months of practice before we can sound as good live as we do after post-production :)

Mike: Thanks for the excellent comments & clarifications on the aircraft orders. You’re right that QF got the A330′s as “lead-in” to the A380′s – deal sweeteners and handy training for the (eventual) A380 crews. As to the Kiwi A320s, yes, it’s not a switch as they already have them, but it is a change from Boeing even if only a small way.

For both QF & AirNZ, having the mixed Airbus & Boeing fleets certainly must help when negotiating prices, eg: “Well, we’re no stranger to the other guys, so maybe they’ll give us a better deal to come even more into their camp…” etc :)

Jeremy (& Mike) – no no, the cunning plan was not to reduce episode lengths. Heck, it usually takes us 5 or 10 minutes just to warm up on an episode (although Steve’s “individual string-ette” episode style for the ATC release is appealing :)

No, we’re going to do it right and get you the best content we can up to #50 and beyond. We have some great ideas for content and are saving our $$$ to help get it. We’ve also got some content that’s waiting to come out but needs me to get some time to work on it. I blame my crazy day job for most of the delay.

So lets see how quickly we can get to episode #50 while still maintaining high quality. We certainly have incentive to try now, eh? :)

Well done guys, I agree with David as above. Great episode. By the way, congratulations for stimulating comments through the site with your speculations on why our local airlines ordered, and have on order, the aircraft they have.

I’ll share with you my recollections of these orders and at the same time, leave myself open to correction when and if I’m wrong.

Qantas – You were correct in mentioning QF opportunistically jumped on American’s cancelled 737 orders post 911 and good on them for it. A great break for them and a natural successor to the (at the time) existing -300s and -400s enabling a smooth transisiton over to the NG’s which is still going on today. They have also since topped up their 737-800 orders as well.
However, regarding the 330s, I believe the original birds were picked up for a song as part of the incentive to get on board with the 380s and again, good on them. However, you mentioned a shift to Airbus since QF wre formally an all Boeing Airline but you did forget to add that they also have 100 orders and commitments for Boeing 787 Dreamliners which will be their mainstay mid-ranger and render the 330s obsolete in time. The 330s being an ‘interim’ model for them and luckily so with all the 787 delays, hence the extra frames ordered since.

Air New Zealand – Also switching to Airbus? Hardly, the 320 is their default narrow body with 12 already in service of the original 15 ordered a few years ago. One was infamously lost during handover from a lease back in France a while ago and two of the orginal order were cancelled. The 73′s being -300s from the ninties (the last tranche being the last ever -300s built I might add.) Yes, it is true, even little old NZ can shake a deal (as can QF and as seen with the 737-300s) out of the OEM’s on the right occassion (a global economic recession being such an occassion) as seen with DJ’s Brett Godfrey looking for more 737NG’s at the moment. You may have aklreay seen that NZ are a big fan of winglets, being the launch customer of the 320 with “sharklets” (WTF) and retro fitting winglets to their 5 763′s.

You did mention the delayed ordered 787s (NZ being the launch airline for the -9) and whether they would ever get them but omitted the fact they have adding to their existing 8 777-200ER’s, 8 777-300ER’s on order to replace the 747-400s as the future flagship’s of NZ’s fleet.

Hey Stu – go for it with the Yak engine sound – just attribute where it came from (all our stuff is under a share-alike, non-commercial, by-attribution creative commons license.

We’re planning to create a library of sounds all available under creative commons license. This would include the Yak-52, DC-3, P-40, Harvard, etc.

Let me know if you want the original of the Yak-52, including the failed start on the first go :)

Well, we average about 8 days between episodes if you look at the history of all 15 (plus the Oshkosh promo piece :) Some times it’s 4 days, other times it has been 14, but usually it’s around a week.

You have listened to all the past episodes, haven’t you? Definitely worth checking out the past ones as there are some great interviews and discussions to check out.

Meanwhile, you’ll be happy to know that we’re recording episode 16 tonight and will be releasing it soon(ish) & episode 17 shortly after. Hang in there :)

Bas – leave the controllers alone! We don’t separate aircraft just on profile, that’s why we use requirements, amended routes, direct tracking, holding, vectors etc because you simply cannot sit and watch more than one conflict. If we did we would be making a lot of assumptions about aircraft performance and many pilots fly the same aircraft type very differently….

Hey Guys,

Great show, thanks for your work. I have one comment about episode 12 and one request in general.

First, with regards to airline reservations, I have found a dirty little secret that the airlines here in the states won’t admit to (or at least I haven’t found anyone to admit to it yet). Sometimes when I am searching for a fare trying to find the best price I will go back to the same flight in the online booking system a number of times. I believe that the computer handling the online booking is programed to notice that there are a number of hits on the flight and so it must think that it is popular… so it ups the price of the flight. I have had this happen a few times, one time I had finally decided what flight a group of us were going to take, then I let the others know and by the 3ed person who went to book, the price had gone up…. for a flight that was 4 months away!! Don’t know if your airlines are using the same program… but it seems most of them around here are!

Last, I am a private pilot in the states so I can usually figure out most of your abbreviations, but there have been a few that leave me scratching my head. I know that the podcasts I listen to from here have been mentioning your podcast, so there is a good chance you are getting a fair amount of us “Yanks” listening to your podcast, so if you can break down your abbreviations every now and then it would be great… for the record, you did do that with some of them over the last 2 shows and it helps quite a bit.

We’ll take these comments on board Mike. We try to keep the show light in nature, and please understand, we approach this show as enthusiasts rather than experts. However, we never set out to upset anyone, so please accept my apologies if I’ve offended you in any way.

We do this as a hobby, and it’s been a very steep learning curve as we go along. The intention is not only to focus on the airlines, or even news each week for that matter, but rather try to pop in the occasional special interest episode.

Steve, give up the cheap cracks on Kiwis and Seppos. It’s getting a bit tiresome. Your colleague Steve I believe, demonstates the level of professionalism needed to be successful with this medium. You should follow his lead.

Otherwise I enjoy the podcast with it’s local news focus, maybe except the lastest podcast which had no news but more and more and more of Matt Hall. Good on him but jeez, there’s a limit.

Except for the fact that this show is performed entirely in the Australian language, I quite enjoyed it.

Never really understood in-flight refueling until Matt explained it.

BTW, did I tell you the story about how I did all the flying for the film, “Top Gun?” It is so true!

Phil: I did my first gliding on Blaniks and still have a very special place for them. Amazingly fun to fly (especially through a loop :) and the trim felt just like a throttle so with trim in the left hand, stick in the right and tandem seating, it was *so* easy to believe you were in a combat jet :)

Adrian: Thanks for the info re: the Show Us Ya Wheels event. I’ve added it to my calendar and will see how things are going around November re: getting out there for the dinner.

Phil….I agree completely ith your comments re. the cost of flying in Australia. This is what forced me out of flying, and has kept me out for so many years…and why we thought it important to include Matts comments on the subject.

What a fantastic interview, very entertaining and offered a great insight into his background. I never knew he started off flying gliders, Blaniks even!! I started my flying in those gliders at RAAF Amberley back in the early 80′s and eventually got into aerobatics out of Bankstown. But he’s right about one thing, trying to buy an aircraft here is not the same as in the States, let alone flying in one as it’s getting so expensive. I think very few people can afford the luxury of a mortgage and the costs of learning to fly and that is very disappointing.

Sorry about that Rob…I left the battered suitcase under a small park bench near the river in Little Rock…trust me!! We should’ve started this thing two years ago – I was in Chicago in 2007!

The music track is called “YouNameIt5″ by Brian Simpson (aka t3cat5) and was sourced from http://www.soundsnap.com You can find it there in the music loops category. The track on its own is quite catchy, but I added the didgeridoo sounds to the start to give it a more Aussie feel, and also the aircraft sounds for obvious reasons. It took a lot of tweaking, but I was happy with the result. If you’d like a copy of the track, I can send it to you – just let me know.

David, thanks for the comments. I don’t know about the Fantasy Island intro though!

This intro is only a temporary one. We’re considering replacing it with a professionally produced theme in the near future. The dideredoo was placed there to give the music a bit of a native feel, given that we think most of our initial listeners will be from the United States.

Great take off fellas.

Enjoyed the podcast, and that’s high praise coming from a trainspotter! I am not sure about the didgeredoo at the start, I think you need the opening credits of Fantasy Island with Hervé Villechaize saying, The Plane, The Plane. If his estate won’t let you use his voice, you can get Daryl Somers frequent impersonation from Hey Hey or Blankety Blanks.
